The Meaning of Cremation Jewelry

Over the years, burial traditions have evolved to meet modern demands and preferences. As more and more families chose cremation as their burial arrangement, the cremation industry has seen an evolution of its own. What started with cremation niches has evolved into the art of cremation jewelry, or keepsake jewelry.

These urn necklaces are a growing trend, giving families the chance to preserve the memory of their loved ones in a more personal way. One of the most private burial options available today, cremation jewelry is set to revolutionize the way we look at burial arrangements.

What Is Cremation Jewelry?

While cremation jewelry is becoming more popular today. This practice, previously known as mourning jewelry, dates back to the 16th century. During this period, cremation jewelry was mainly rings or brooches with white enamel to represent the loss of an unmarried person, or a black skull representing a married loved one.

Back then, the mourning jewelry rings and brooches had details such as the name of the deceased, their age, and date of death. These were also known as memento mori jewelry pieces, which is Latin for “be mindful of death,” where common among the wealthy.

Today, cremation jewelry serves as a physical option to carry a reminder of a loved one in a very discreet manner. Modern cremation jewelry comes in beads, rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and more.

How Cremation Jewelry Works?

For the urn necklaces, there is a hidden internal “urn” or space that holds the cremains. These pendants have a threaded stopper that works like a screw. With the use of a small funnel, you can place the cremated remains inside the pendant, ring, necklace, or bead. The cremains rests securely in the jewelry piece, which can be worn as any traditional jewelry.

Cremation Jewelry Styles

As jewelry craftsmanship continued to evolve, so did cremation jewelry styles. Today, family members can choose from a variety of cremation jewelry styles. Each one a way to memorialize and pay tribute to their loved ones.

Classic Cremation Jewelry

These are what most people known as cremation jewelry pieces. Traditional necklaces with a hidden space to place the cremated remains. Classic cremation jewelry is made with the help of a mini-funnel and a threaded screw to secure the remains.

Cremation Glass Jewelry

Cremation pendants and beads are becoming highly popular. Some cultures use cremation beads as one of their burial traditions. For this jewelry style, the cremated ashes are mixed in with glass during the cremation process.

Cremation Diamonds

Cremation diamonds are made out of the cremated remains. Using a patented process, cremation specialists heat the ashes to specific temperatures. Then, they follow a set of steps to turn ashes into cremation diamonds or crystals. The cremation crystals take between 8-10 weeks to create. On the other hand, cremation diamonds can take up to 18 months.

Storage Options for Cremations

There are plenty of storage options for cremains, as well as other ways to pay tribute to your loved ones. From burial plots and mausoleums to columbariums, the possibilities for cremation storage are endless.
